Description
Megan Shepard was not looking forward to Christmas. Now divorced, all
she had to look forward to was spending Christmas in Derbyshire, with her sixty
four year old, bisexual, hippie mother, and a scrawny little sapling tree,
overdressed with cheap decorations from the pound shop. However, her friends
had other ideas, like taking her to Pinkie’s Night Club, their old stomping
ground as teenagers. This brought back memories of rah-rah skirts, fishnets,
and legwarmers dancing to Madonna, until the DJ played The Power of Love,
whereupon Richie King would take her hand and lead her to the dance floor.
Seeing Richie leaning against the bar in his unforgettable Danny Zucko pose, she knows the right thing to do would be to walk in the opposite direction, yet finds herself walking straight to him, and taking the advice of her unconventional mother. Swept off her feet to the winter wonderland of Manchester’s Christmas Market, romantic walks in the snow of the Derbyshire Peak District, and fireside dinners, she has to wonder if Richie really changed, or has he something to hide?

Angel of Kindness

Switching on the coffee machine, I waited until the dark brown liquid slowly trickled into the jug, before looking out of my mother’s kitchen window. All the other houses on this quiet Derbyshire cul-de-sac had turned into an explosion of life and colour, with decorated windows, ready for the forthcoming Christmas festivities. Customarily, by now my house in Leightonstone East London would be fully dressed with lights, tinsel, and foliage. A large tree chosen with great care and attention would take pride of place in the living room. The house would smell of cinnamon and spices from endless nights after arriving home from my job at the advertising agency, I would play corny Christmas songs filling me full of Christmas cheer and spirit, while cooking puddings, mince pies and biscuits that we would still be eating well into the New Year. I haven’t a clue why. It wasn’t as if we had a house full of children, in fact, children had never been on my agenda; well, hardly surprising, if you knew my background.
My mother, Lois, had me while she was studying art in Paris. She returned home to Derbyshire just long enough to pop me out and leave me with my grandparents, then fled back to her ménage a trios—a sculptor and his artist wife, my mother’s lesbian lover. Three years later, she returned only to scamper away again, after eighteen months, to live in a commune. So the whole cycle started again, until my grandparents grew old and my mother was forced to return to Derbyshire.
Looking at the garden, there was no plastic Santa Claus, no lights in the conifer tree, not even a wreath hung on the door. Instead of the large spectacular tree, hidden in the corner of mum’s living room, skulked a scrawny little sapling that still looked overdressed with cheap decorations from the pound shop; this Christmas, everything looked bare, unimaginative, and dowdy, a mirror image as to how my life felt at this moment in time. Here I was, Megan Shepherd, forty- six, spending Christmas with her sixty-four year old, bisexual mother.
Come on! Surely, my feelings were justified. For sixteen years, I thought I had had the perfect marriage to Ian, a history lecturer at the local college. How wrong I had been.

Review by - Just Do It Mummy
Tuesday, 26 November 2013
It's not often I have
time to sit down and read a book, and then if I do, it is normally a text book
full of facts and information I need to retain. However, every so often it is
nice to lose yourself in a good short story, and for one author, I am always
eager to read anything she writes. Since my lovely friend Jo Rawson moved to Goa to
be an author I have been an avid fan of her work.
Jo's latest book is
called "Angel of
Kindness" and is a short story which is perfect for this
time of year. Angel of Kindness is a very easy read and would appeal to those
who like reading chic-lit.
The story is set in
Derbyshire at Christmas. Megan has returned home to her bi-sexual hippy mother
who is not the most traditional of people. Finding herself back in her old
town, with old friends, Megan is throwing off the shackles of a dreary marriage
and a cheating husband, and reliving her misspent youth. Dragged to her old
haunt (the local nightclub) by her well-meaning friends, Megan runs into a
blast from the past, and wonders whether she made the right choices all those
years ago.....
This story reminds me
of going home for Christmas back to your old friends and family where time
stands still whilst your life evolves. Set at one of the most picturesque times
of year, Jo manages to conjure up a vivid picture of quintessential British
life and the British traditions that surround Christmas. With a good dose of
old Derbyshire charm thrown in this delightful short story warms the hear
strings and just proves how the power of Christmas can bring people together.
Angel of Kindness is
available to buy here
for just 99 cents via pdf and $1.23 for Kindle.
I would definitely recommend having a read as the is fantastic.

He was her first love and the bad boy she never
forgot. For him, no other woman had ever measured up to her. They'd gone
their separate ways, and thirty years had come and gone. Could they rekindle
that old flame or had time changed them both beyond recognition?
As a teen, Megan Shepherd fell hard for Richie King, but Richie lived just a hair's breadth within the law and her disapproving grandparents warned her Richie would never amount to much. Sneaking around behind her grandparents' backs grew old and, with college looming, Megan officially broke things off with Richie and she eventually moved to London and married someone else. When her husband had a mid-life crisis and Megan discovered he was cheating, she ended a lengthy but lackluster marriage and found herself back in her hometown as a recent divorcee staying with her bisexual hippie mother during her Christmas holidays from work. During a reunion night out with her old girlfriends, Megan discovered Richie King now owned the night club that had once been their old teenage haunt, as well as several popular clubs in other cities. Apparently Richie had made out well in life, but whether he'd managed to find success on the right side of the law was questionable. Still, once she and Richie locked eyes again, the particulars of how Richie obtained his current lifestyle didn't seem to matter quite as much. Yes, a lot of time had passed and they both had broken marriages, but it was almost as if they were teens again and had never lost contact. Sadly, Meghan wasn't planning to stay in Derbyshire since her home and career in East London was all she had left. But, Richie, charming as ever, miraculously seemed the same, yet different, and those old feelings were resuscitating under the pointed attentions of an old flame that never fully extinguished. Was what was rekindling between Megan and Richie the truth, or was it merely a distraction based on old and wishful teenage dreams? No matter the age of her characters or the situations they find themselves in, the very talented Joanne Rawson always manages to keep her stories engaging and entertaining from start to finish. Exploring the subject matter of first love, old chemistry reignites between Megan and Richie, but their present lives are rather far apart and their adult life experiences have tainted their views of marriage, love, and happiness. They each have fond memories of their youthful relationship, but the long-ago warnings of Megan's grandparents still resonate and, once again, have Megan questioning her heart and mind with regards to Richie. Secondary characters, such as Megan's free-spirited mother, add contrast, sparkle, and a dose of sound common sense that makes this tale a perfect but quirky holiday romance that wraps the reader in the warmth of love and holiday magic. |
